Studies dating in the early 1900's records information to indicate that biological diversity is the only sustainable design for sustainable living. An individual organism or even a select few of organisms cannot be held responsible for sustainable living. This is when modern farming methods currently have it wrong, and so are therefore struggling with multiple problems like pests, low crop yield and purchase of farming techniques. Permaculture took place due to the pressing realization by certain teams of people that our planet is reaching its physical limits. Our ever-increasing appetite for energy is depleting all-natural resources open to us. The depressing considered Earth stripped of her resources generated a silent yet strong revolution that voiced the cry for brand spanking new ways of sustainable designs for sustainable living - coming from all organisms, not only humans.

Permaculture, according to Andrew Faust who has been teaching permaculture design for more than 17 years, could possibly be referred to as increasing ecological health to meet human needs. Faust, like other hinterland, advocates low-tech, passive farming methods rather than high-tech, "energy-hog" infrastructure which is being followed by farmers today. Permaculture or 'permanent culture' builds on the sustainable design for sustainable living provided by I think mother nature herself. A complex network of interconnected species form simultaneous connections with various organisms as well as the total product is a synergistic whole that is nurtured by these interconnections. As the variety of interconnections increases, so also does the sustainability with the system. As an example, in a farmland, the farmer uses pesticides to regulate weeds. However, in the permaculture farm, animals such as sheep could be reared to create natural weed control. Thus, every aspect in the permaculture farm contributes seamlessly for the growth and development of the farm. The truth that this technique includes humans is simply incidental; actually, the system isn't developed for or around humans but includes humans among the elements inside. As a result of above reasons, permaculture farming is much less labor intensive than the usual modern farm. A natural forest includes a quantity of layers of elements within it. From low lying plants to creepers, shrubs and tall trees, different elements populate it. Producing required material from this type of ecosystem would outweigh the creation of the same material in a modern farm. The reason being the first sort requires little by means of maintenance as the modern farm needs ploughing, seeding, manuring, cultivating, weeding and so on. The power needed to often a modern farm requires different types of inputs from fossil fuel to more conventional varieties of energy. However, whenever we could coax the natural forest to make the crops that individuals want, the time and effort and the energy required could be much lesser. This can be the sustainable design seen in nature that individuals depends on for sustainable living.
