A visiting lecturer in the University of Brighton has launched a publishing initiative to boost funds for educating Syrian children moving into camps in Iraqi Kurdistan. In October 2015 Julie Pratten told us that they received a Facebook message getting aid from a logistics officer with the Domiz camp near Dohuk in Iraqi Kurdistan. She then launched a crowdfunding initiative to raise money to setup a school inside the camp.

Ms Pratten said she was told that the volunteers who be employed in the camping ground were so busy coping with health problems that nobody had time to completely engage with the kids”, she said. “They didn’t have any activities, your personal computer, or craft supplies, they didn’t also have a room where they might play.”She proceeded to state that they were given permission to turn a “mobile unit, brimming with old boxes” in the camp right into a classroom, which Kaniwar, and a few other volunteers within the camp cleared out and stuffed with donated craft supplies and furniture borrowed from a local school away from camp. The guts School is run by way of a local English teacher, who is another refugee. So far, the project has raised around ?3,000.When we started “The kids were queuing up outside to go into the classroom,” Ms Pratten continued. “We can instruct about 100 kids. These kids are already through a lot. A lot of them have lost their parents for the war. Others have mislaid their friends on the sea. At this point they merely have to play and sing this will let you little fun. For Four years they’ve held it's place in that camp along with their lives have been getting hold.”The purpose of the publishing initiative would be to raise funds to compliment the college. ‘Now how the school is defined I will be interested in the sustainability with the project. Asking people for money is hard therefore i chose to change my strategy and request for the help of the international community of ELT Syrianrefugeescrowdsourced activity book English language teaching Julie Pratten. I appealed to authors and teachers to ‘donate’ one activity each. The very first publication, A-Z of Hope is often a crowdsourced book of 26 activities for young learners to teenagers for the universal theme of joy and happiness. The response from authors may be overwhelming. Book 1 and two are fully subscribed and now we use a waiting set of authors ready to step up when someone can’t submit. We've over 160 authors signed up who are prepared to help with future projects. The 1st book will likely be published at the end of April and this will be launched with the Annual IATEFL conference to become held from 13 to 16 April in the ICC in Birmingham.
