VPN means Virtual Private Network. This is a technology that allows anyone to remotely hook up to an exclusive network, so they really are "virtually" attached to that network, that these are on-site and attached to the LAN. VPN is wonderful for remote workers to connect with office resources, such as internal web portals and file shares, without needing to be physically on the job. In this computer networking notes VPN tutorial, we are going to take a brief overview of many and reasons like Web proxy.

There are several VPN protocols and types of VPN's. LAN-to-LAN VPN's are employed to connect multiple networks together. For instance, a company office may decide to have connectivity to multiple branch offices for internal communication and resource access. This permits edge firewalls to still block any outside access that tries to connect with its protected resources, but still allow these VPN connections as though these are "internal" or already for the trusted side with the firewall. IPSec can be a number of security protocols that are most commonly utilized for LAN-to-LAN VPN's, providing a substantial group of varying encryption and authentication protocols. Remote workers hook up with remote VPN's. These are typically temporary, or "dial-in" connections. Windows includes PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol) built-in, which gives a straightforward access approach to reveal. However, PPTP relies on a weak encryption protocol, called MS-CHAP, that makes it a less favorable option. IPSec can also be used for remote VPN's, by using special third-party client software, and/or IPv6. SSL VPN's are getting to be very popular for remote access VPN's, as they give a secure connection, as well as the easiest selection for remote workers. Using a SSL VPN, remote workers can usually login to some HTTPS web page that permits them to download an app (ordinarily a Java app) that may serve as the client software. Following the initial install, clients typically run the app while not having to login to the web page. SSL VPN's also may allow access online portal to specific resources and not having to give remote workers a full network connection to the individual network. Besides granting access to remote workers, VPN may also be accustomed to mask a host's true identity. This presents a security alarm concern, since VPN can be used as an encrypted tunnel to handle classified data from a business LAN. Modern data loss prevention (DLP) and firewall rules not allowing outbound VPN connections are a fantastic kick off point, but SSL is quite difficult to accurately block, simply because that many legitimate secure websites use SSL. VPN services can even be enrolled in for masking a host's external IP. For example, a site or service might be allowed in the UK, however, if someone in the United States connects with a UK VPN server and uses it to browse on the site, it would appear we were holding in england.
