A visiting lecturer on the University of Brighton has launched a publishing initiative to increase funds for educating Syrian children living in camps in Iraqi Kurdistan. In October 2015 Julie Pratten told us she received a Facebook message asking for aid from a logistics officer on the Domiz camp near Dohuk in Iraqi Kurdistan. She then launched a crowdfunding initiative to boost money to set up a faculty from the camp.

Ms Pratten said she was told how the volunteers who work in the camp ground were so busy dealing with medical issues that nobody had time to essentially build relationships the kids”, she said. “They didn’t have got activities, some type of computer, or craft supplies, they didn’t even have a room where they may play.”She took to state they were given permission to show a “mobile unit, packed with old boxes” within the camp right into a classroom, which Kaniwar, and some other volunteers inside the camp cleared out and filled with donated craft supplies and furniture borrowed from a local school away from camp. The Heart School runs by the local English teacher, who is also a refugee. So far, the work has raised around ?3,000.When we started “The kids were queuing up outside to get in the classroom,” Ms Pratten continued. “We can show about 100 kids. These kids have already been through a lot. Most of them choosing a lump sum their parents for the war. Others have lost their friends towards the sea. At this stage they merely should play and sing this will let you little bit of fun. For Four years they’ve held it's place in that camp along with their lives have been on hold.”The objective of the publishing initiative is usually to raise funds to support the institution. ‘Now that the school is set up I will be interested in the sustainability with the project. Asking people for cash is tough therefore i decided to change my strategy and request for help from the international community of ELT Syrianrefugeescrowdsourced activity book English language teaching Julie Pratten. I appealed to authors and teachers to ‘donate’ one activity each. The 1st publication, A-Z of Hope is often a crowdsourced book of 26 activities for young learners to teenagers about the universal theme of joy and happiness. The response from authors may be overwhelming. Book 1 and a couple of are fully subscribed so we use a waiting set of authors ready to step in when someone can’t submit. Now we have over 160 authors joined who're willing to help with future projects. The very first book will probably be posted at get rid of April and will also be launched in the Annual IATEFL conference being held from 13 to 16 April with the ICC in Birmingham.
