For people who spent my childhood years within the 80 music, the music activity of this decade will continue to be the soundtrack for the key moments of our own lives. Music provides a time machine, transporting us back through time and rekindling memories, both the pros and cons, and 1980s music provided a tune for each and every event in this tumultuous decade.

The 80s began in turmoil and social unrest and the music reflected this requirement of change. The last decade began hanging to the coattails with the Punk revolution that took direct action against the bland musical fare of the late seventies, but finished with stadium rock, manufactured mass produced pop as well as a confidence and swagger that matched our planet's mood even as we entered the 90's within a spirit of optimism and hope with falling in the Iron Curtain in 1989. The dawn with the MTV era meant the looks of your band was as vital as their musical ability and also this principle was seized upon through the New Romantic Movement, who dressed flamboyantly and daubed themselves with makeup -annoying their elders as much as it delighted their peers. Having begun in that state of flux, 1980s music continued to evolve as technologies emerged and artists, musicians and film makers began to experiment. However, because decade unfurled, and so the mainstream music, yet again, returned to a formulaic approach with all the production companies, such as the phenomenally successful 'Stock, Aitkin and Waterman' manufacture hit after hit after hit of disposable pop. This saw the growth from the producer - top males and females of the bands selected just as much for his or her eye candy appeal because talent or capability to write songs and play instruments. Music had truly become as much a visible medium as an aural one. Nevertheless, a solid 'alternative' scene survived within these times, as diverse as Indie rock and pop, Goth, Hiphop and House. 1980s music laid the principles for thus most of the background music we tune in to today.
