For individuals who spent my childhood years in the 80s, the songs of the decade will continue to be the soundtrack for the key moments of our lives. Music provides for a time machine, transporting us back over time and rekindling memories, the pros and cons, and 1980s music provided a tune for each event in this tumultuous decade.

The 80s began in turmoil and social unrest along with the music reflected this requirement of change. The decade began hanging about the coattails of the Punk revolution that took direct action from the bland musical fare in the late seventies, but finished with stadium rock, manufactured produced in higher quantities pop and a confidence and swagger that matched earth's mood as we entered the 90's within a spirit of optimism and hope with falling from the Iron Curtain in 1989. The dawn with the MTV era meant the overall look of the band was as critical as their musical ability which principle was seized upon through the New Romantic Movement, who dressed flamboyantly and daubed themselves with makeup -annoying their elders just as much as it delighted their peers. Having begun in that state of flux, 1980s music continued to evolve as technology emerged and artists, musicians and movie makers began to experiment. However, because the decade unfurled, therefore the mainstream music, again, returned to some formulaic approach with the production companies, much like the phenomenally successful 'Stock, Aitkin and Waterman' manufacture hit after hit after hit of disposable pop. This saw the increase of the producer - the leading males and females from the bands selected as much for his or her eye candy appeal because talent or ability to write songs and play instruments. Music had truly become all the a visual medium just as one aural one. Nevertheless, a solid 'alternative' scene survived within these times, as diverse as Indie rock and pop, Goth, Rap and House. 1980s music laid the foundations for therefore much of the music we tune in to today.
